Elections Canada requires paper ballots marked by hand. Even if you count the paper ballots using a machine, the paper ballots are still kept, and can be physically counted one by one in front of the candidates upon request (automatically if there is a close election).

It might take a few hours longer than voting machines, but elections aren't about speed.
