happy Friday
I did my first "public event" last week. I'm still worried about covid, so I expect it's something that I won't repeat this year. But we're currently in a lull before the next wave, so I risked it this time.
I attended the opening day celebration for an artist-designed community garden about a dozen long blocks east of my house. They had music and free food from YouthFarm. It was quite nice. I took a few pictures, but none of them really do it justice. The place is called "Deep Roots Garden". It has many of the same food plants that I have at my house: juneberries, gooseberries, celery, cilantro, tomato, carrot.

Later at home I donated some money online to YouthFarm to keep the effort going. Afterwards I discovered that they're also at GiveMN.org, which is very convenient. They'll probably make my list again for the state's annual "Give To The Max" day in November. It's a really great way to encourage small donations in quantities that make a difference. If you couldn't tell from Minnesota's voter participation rates, the population here is really quite devoted to the idea of community, even if there's a lot of inequality that needs to be addressed.
Anyway, I was joined at that opening by someone I know from the Outwoods group. Afterwards, we regrouped at my house, where I showed off the overgrown garden. Finally, a beehive somewhere has found my bergamot. They always like it. These two photos (taken this morning, not last week) are unusual, because one bee is black-with-yellow while the other is yellow-with-black. I have no idea what kind of bees they are.

After the garden tour, we went on an 8-10km (5-6 mile) walk to the nearby Theodore Wirth Park. I'm more out-of-shape now than at any point in my life, but it was still good to get out for a decent hike. We found a really nice lake area that neither of us knew about previously. It's accessible only by trail, not by road. No road noise there. Very cool. One of the "locals" there said that Jack Black visited there once. I suppose maybe it happened back in 2015, but that event seems a weird detail to mention to anyone about this place. On the way back, we discovered a street sign in the middle of nowhere.

So it's been a relatively peaceful week for me. Only a few interruptions by gunfire. We'll call that a good week.
