garlic and asparagus
Today, after work, I planted German extra hardy garlic cloves in the raised bed at the front of my yard. To do that, I had to transplant kill some asparagus that was in that space.
Surprisingly, asparagus roots go as far down as the stalks rise above ground. I thought the "crown" was just below the surface, but no. I tried to replant the asparagus where I really want it, in the shade of the raised bed, but I'm not sure any of the transplants will survive. If not, I'll be sure to plant a lot of new seeds next year. Eventually, one of these years, I'll finally have a crop rather than just a spear or two that I experimentally harvest.
