we're getting a grocery store

Great news!

We're getting a grocery store in north Minneapolis, entering the same space used by the former Aldi's. I don't know anything about Colonial Market and Restaurant, but judging from the pictures I see at this page, they'll have the things I want that I can't get at the asian grocery. I saw news stories today from MPR and BringMeTheNews.

Bonuses:

  1. They're based in Minnesota, so the money will stay "local".
  2. The owner (pictured here) describes himself as "Afro-Mexican", so the money will help a minority-owned business.
  3. It would be great if I don't have to walk 1.5 miles through the warzone each way, take bus rides, or pay for delivery, thereby making food that much cheaper for me.

All of this news makes me happy.

"Colonial Market" is a heck of a name by an Afro-Mexican person but I guess he (first article only gave me a glimpse before paywall pop-up so very guessing here) knows what he's doing.

Seeing lots of grocery store consolidation out here. ShopRite got bought by Market 32/Price Chopper (part of another huge chain I'm sure) and closed two large locations and the large Price Chopper we'd sometimes go to closed taking out a fairly large stripmall. It's less significant in town, but out in the burbs, they basically halved the number of large supermarkets in that merger. It doesn't have everything, but I'm grateful for the food co-op that's about a 20 minute bike ride away, in way too small of a building and almost always with a very full parking lot. I guess it's kind of a thing in New York to have line-in hired help and send them to the co-op to do your volunteer hours for you to the point where some co-ops banned that.

Ahem. Anyway. Hope that's everything you could ever hope for. It's nice only having to do the longer trip infrequently for odd items.
