lies and truth about defunding the police

For the last two weeks, my television has been sporadically bombarded with lies about what it means to defund the police. That video is up on Trump's official channel on YouTube.

You do know that Trump lies, right? About everything?  From the video:

"You have reached the 911 police emergency line. Due to defunding of the police department, we're sorry, but no one is here to take your call. If you are calling to report a rape, please press 1. To report a murder, press 2. To report a home invasion, press 3. For all other crimes, leave your name and number, and someone will get back to you. Our estimated wait time is currently 5 days. Goodbye."

First, the Minneapolis proposed city charter change is already online. It certainly does not eliminate 911 service, which is a Minnesota state and county arrangement. It moves police from a major ("charter") city department into a subservient group beneath a new "Community Safety and Violence Prevention" department. This change allows the superior department to shift dramatically both funds and authority towards services that are actually needed instead of ONLY to armed personnel responding to all calls. Armed services are still needed and will be provided, but now there will be better oversight of a rogue department with increasingly high payouts.

Second, the ad tries to fear-monger you into submission. Dire anarchy is far from certain. Yes, crime went up in Baltimore with less aggressive policing, but it went substantially down in New York and in Albuquerque when police decided to go on strike.  Are police adding to or subtracting from the stresses in a community?  It goes both ways, apparently.

Third, police here already aren't processing rape cases, and 1/3 to 1/2 of murders go unsolved. We're getting little service for our $193 million tax dollars in that regard.  We deserve better.

I remain strongly in favor of defunding the police.  Disband the absurdly militarized gang that it has become, and reform that department into something new.
