Okay, so the Target customer service with their delaying tactic was not yanking my chain. I called them again today. They agreed to replace the item, due to arrive on Wednesday next week, and they finally sent me an email update (the first) on this issue instead of just reference numbers they told me verbally on the phone. And they reassured me this replacement will also have the instructions to leave the package behind that front patio door, just like the first delivery.
It will arrive too late for the -27C/16F air temperatures forecast for Monday, but I'll figure out something else to stay warm until then.
