local: movie Sept 20 Monday 7:30pm

For you locals in the Twin Cities, classic (1956) sci-fi movie "Forbidden Planet" will show in 8 days at the Heights Theater.  Mark your calendar now, if this is the kind of thing that appeals to you.  It's one showing, only!

This movie is worth a viewing on the big screen, especially if you've never seen it before.  The story is based on a Shakespeare play ("The Tempest"), the special effects are pretty good for the time, and special prop "Robby The Robot" (shown in the movie poster) appeared in many movies and television series later on.

I plan to be there.  Join me in the theater if you'd like.  I'll probably walk from where I live since it's nearby.  This theater is just a few blocks from Lily's Cafe, if you've attended a Bear Coffee event there.  The food and drinks are reasonably priced at this theater, unlike most others.  They allow people to bring in ice cream from the Dairy Queen next door, too.

You may know that this movie is based on Shakespeare´s "The Tempest" already and it is one of my fav sci-fi movies of all time. How fortunate of you that you will see it on a true cinema screen! Also I was one of those fortunate kids whose parents gave the now famed japanese Nomura mechanical "Robby the Robot" toy for Christmas back in 1957! Robby, that movie and I have always had a long history together! hehe Thanks for sharing dear Terry! Hugs, Luis. :o)

While that's a classic of science fiction films, these days it can be a little hard to accept Leslie Nielsen in a dramatic role.

Yeah, ever since Airplane!, he got typecast as the doddering old fool. Such a great character but still an unfortunate sidetrack for his career.

I don't know. As Roger Ebert said, "How often does a single actor define a whole genre of films?"

He was a good actor, but not a great one. The gag movies made him much more famous than dramatic acting ever would have.
