planet: Glory
2007-Dec-15, Saturday 08:20 amWhen astrophysicists finally succeed in cataloging "nearby" habitable planets, I expect that we will see a rush to colonize them that's reminiscent of wagon trains moving across North America to settle the western territory in America. I wrote about it many years ago, crediting the colonization movement specifically to fundamentalist Christians intent upon creating a proper, God-fearing society from scratch. It will be a very interesting experiment. I expect their particular one to fail, of course, as no lineage can guarantee 100% adherence to any philosophy. It will be rough for any of them to figure out what to do with heretics though, when small populations would require such close interaction. But I digress...
Identification of nearby earth-like worlds is progressing nicely. Chalk up one more possibility at Gliese 581, only 20.4 light years away.
When do you think the Christian Broadcasting Network will start fundraising to build their colony ship? My guess was year 2072.
