2008-Feb-07, Thursday 08:52 amI forgot to mention earlier...
A few people commented (during debate of a resolution to tax gambling to help fund assistance for families in need) about the hard financial times they're experiencing right now. Not what's in the news, but what they're going through themselves.
Precincts for the DFL met at a local Middle School building. My precinct met in the room of a Ms. Weyenberg. I don't know what grade level she teaches, but the one-piece desk-tables were not a very appropriate size for Minnesota-sized adults. :)
And the room was littered with gay-friendly material. I first noticed the huge rainbow flag in the corner, printed with the word Peace in various languages on it. Then the poster including portraits of various literary figures and the text, "Unfortunately, history has set the record too straight." Then the rainbow poster with the outline of a family on it and the words, "All Families Welcome".
I remember a few years ago (when I was still attending classes at Normandale Community College) and I spoke (as an invited guest from the gay student group) about GLBT issues to a class of people who will eventually become teachers of elementary kids. I think it's great that this generation of students will have exposure to multicultural ideas long before they get dumped into the workplace and have to deal with people of all backgrounds there. I remember mentioning that considering the age of the kids they'll be working with, they're unlikely to have anyone come out as GLB (but maybe T) in their classrooms, but they'll most likely be working at some point with a child who has two parents of the same gender.
