Peanut and puppiesAnother week, another opportunity for stories about animals and our relationship with them. If you're looking for a new pet (dog, cat, rabbit, mouse, guinea pig, ferret, or bird), consider going to your local animal shelter to find an adoptable animal. For people who already have animals, please remember to spay or neuter your family pet.

A pit bull mother (still lactating) was delivered to our shelters at the same time as a litter of 4-week-old Shepherd-mix puppies (whose mother was hit by a car). Placing them together, Peanut began taking care of her foster children. It's hoped that her example will help to convince the public that not all dogs are alike, and there are some sweet dogs that would make good pets even if they are of breeds normally known for bad temperament.

Read their story in a local newspaper.

Lily and BenjaminLily and Benjamin are a bonded pair of rabbits, meaning that they must be adopted together. (There is a small discount to the usual adoption fee.) They are a couple with an unusual appearance. Lily is a young woman, 2 years old, with a large flamboyant presence. Benjamin, on the other hand, is an older male, a mature man of 3 years, looking petite and timid next to his snugglebunny. They have lived in a home with other animals before, so they'd likely be good companions in any household. If you know someone willing to give them a new home, send them over to the Golden Valley site for a visit with the happy couple.

The cute guinea pigs who lost their home to foreclosure still don't have photos up on the website yet. More about them next week, if they haven't found homes yet.

And we still have lots and lots of felines who need homes. Please pass word along in case you can stir up interest somewhere. I visit the cats almost daily now, and they are all very lovable. There are a few in particular that I can hear purring at me long before I reach their cage. They need and deserve new homes.
