I never thought that an inauguration ceremony could inspire songwriting, but I was very wrong.

Minnesota Public Radio aired an episode yesterday that included a song called "Moving In" that's a nice upbeat kind of song.

(You can hear the whole episode in which they discuss the song at:

[livejournal.com profile] furrbear caught scent of a new website with a whole video experience on it.  "Born Again American" is a wee bit too religious to make me comfortable, but it has just broad enough appeal that they managed to get a Jew and a Muslim to sing along with them for the video.

My workplace is closed on Monday for the national holiday, Martin Luther King Jr. day.  On Tuesday, we're setting up televisions at all 5 sites so that people can watch the inauguration live on tv while they're at work.  This experience is altogether different from previous presidents.  I suppose even mediocrity could feel astonishingly upbeat after nearly a decade of "W".  It's a nice change.

I still expect the American economic system to disappear in the next few years.  Neither Republicans nor Democrats will save us from this inevitability.  Community involvement like these songs suggest is what will get us through the bad times.  Cooperative building and teaching.  Community organizing.  I think we have the right president for the times that are coming.
