Furry Friday
2009-Jun-13, Saturday 08:40 amIs it "a day late and a dollar short" or is it "better late than never"? The busy season has arrived! Our shelter is not full of cats yet, but it's getting close. With the busy breeding season underway, now is a good time to visit your local shelters to find cats and dogs that need homes. Remember to have your own family pet spayed or neutered to prevent overpopulation.
Stories: I was in Saint Paul doing computer installs recently and met a siamese mother who had also played surrogate mom to another litter of kittens. I was going to spotlight her this week, but she's already found a home. I was also planning to mention a beautiful but very small adult male ferret, but he's also disappeared to a new home in the last day or two. Good for them.
The vets in Golden Valley were having a problem this week with the webcam that they use to take the photos that you see on our website (and here). I went down to help. They had tried rebooting the pc, and it was taking a while to come back up. Meanwhile, the puppy they were trying to photograph had made use of the extra time to poop all over the exam table. Doh! So I got downstairs to a very smelly room and worked to get the camera back up and working for them. Meanwhile, just outside the door, I saw an adorable plastic bin full of puppies! A large litter of young puppies (not babies, just young adults) were awaiting their turn at the exam table, with inquisitive noses poking up at the top of the bin. Fun! :)
Animals:
Peanut is an adult female cat, mostly white with a mix of yellow in there too. She is marked as a timid/shy creature, so she would probably do best in a home without small children. If I remember correctly, the paperwork on her cage said she was part of a humane investigation case. When I visited her, she desired a lot of attention and was very friendly, although she kept her tail tucked tightly against her body the whole time that she was throwing herself against my hand for attention.
I expect that this special cat would do well in a calm environment, opening up to become much more sociable and friendly with visitors.
Three other nice ladies are Spring, Summer, and Winter. They are currently peaceably sharing the same home. I have not taken these gerbils out of their cage, but when I've visited them they have been inquisitive but not fearful. They are also silky shiny, and I'd guess they'll be very soft and cuddly for the owner who can tame them. I don't think it would take much effort to acclimate them to a new owner.
These 4 animals are currently available for visitation and adoption at our Golden Valley facility.
How you can help: I'll mention it again next issue, but please remind all pet owners to NOT take their animals outdoors with them on July 4th for the social festivities. Animals get spooked and run away, then on July 5th the shelters are swamped with people turning in the lost animals. Save the animals and the shelters the misfortune by reminding everyone to treat their animals responsibly and keep them indoors during the fireworks displays.
