Newsflash: African-American male in District of Columbia kills elderly disabled man.

"It's an announcement not just for America but for the world."  Seriously, last night's media blitz was a huge disappointment.  Reality had two opportunities to redeem itself, but it didn't.

1) Voyager probes are nearing their exit from our solar system.  They're about to cross the outer barrier of the heliosphere, the area of influence produced by our sun.  This event marks the entry of humanity into general galactic territory.  If there is a galactic society that enforces non-proliferation laws, then it's a suitable moment for "first contact" (and an explanation of current galactic law; file your requests for new building permits in the central office).

2) Bin Laden could have been hiding out somewhere in Libya, finally providing a vaguely reasonable justification for our entry into a 3rd war zone on the planet.

Neither of these realities showed themselves.  I'm disappointed by all the hubbub, and I left even before the president's speech.  It was one big pep rally held on the anniversary of Bush's even-more-inane mission accomplished speech.  So the Nobel Peace Prize president still has us involved in three war zones, our illegal and unethical holding facility is still open, and everybody got to cheer at a sick old man's death last night.

I'm hoping for intergalactic civilization, and I get stupid human politics.  Color me disappointed.
