Startopia returns!
2019-Sep-03, Tuesday 05:54 pmLinux is definitely mainstream. One of my favorite Top 10 games of all time is being resurrected almost 20 years after the original. And... *wait for it*... AND it will also run on Linux! Yay!
Originally published in 2001, I think the humor in it was influenced by the tv animated sitcom, Futurama.
In the original Startopia game, you operate a dilapidated space station that you try to repair over time. Various alien species visit your dock, and it's up to you to deal with them reasonably. Some are vacationers hoping to spend some money on entertainment, some are workers hoping to buy supplies, some are religious zealots hoping to convert your residents, and some are criminals who threaten to blow up parts of your station and kill your residents.
There are 3 decks to the ringed station that you manage.
There are 9 visiting species in the game, and of course my favorite are the hippy Karmarama. They are purple longhair treehuggers who tend the plants on your bio-deck and occasionally (if they're really happy) experience karmagasms that make everyone else in range happy.
The new "Spacebase Startopia" is expected in Q3 2020.

I've already added it to my wishlist on Steam.

"Aliens show up, and you extract money from them however you can while trying to keep casualties to a minimum. It was Babylon 5 run by the Muppets, which is about as flippant a comparison as the game itself."

- The outer deck is primarily the dock and other infrastructure.
- The middle deck is for entertainment buildings (hotels, bars, disco, etc.).
- The inner deck with the windowed ceiling is the habitat where you manage the biological climate in detail to grow resources and make your residents happy by matching their own unique climate preferences.
