2019-Dec-21, Saturday 10:34 amSolstice occurs later today. It's a time when the northern hemisphere is at its darkest, with increasing sunlight set to appear tomorrow. It's a good time for hope and reflection, an idea which world holidays at this time of year also notice.
I expect to write more posts in the coming months that are, in a word, depressing. I see very bad trends (climate, economy, politics, civics), and I intend to name them and explain them soon. It will seem overwhelming and frustrating. But on this solstice day let me remind everyone that there remains reason for hope. These are dark times, there's no getting around it, but it's no time for despair.
I intend today's theme song to be an anthem of encouragement for the months ahead. This segment (voted one of the best TV episodes of 2019 by IGN) comes from the DC Universe version of Doom Patrol, a story about superhero misfits. Their name is also a good reminder of the tough year ahead of us, and the need for perseverance through dark times.
I find this video far more inspiring than the original music video from 2013, and we'll need that kind of inspiration. I see tough times ahead, tougher than the last year. Care for yourself. Disengage when you need. Rest, recuperate. But as this video reminds us, even safe spaces like Danny Street can find themselves endangered, and it's important that somebody step up to confront those dangers. When you're ready.
You don't have to change the world alone; there are others here too. An ocean is a multitude of drops. All you need is just enough bravery to let go a little bit of the tangle of fear and anger and doubt, and just for long enough to perform a single act during the respite.
It's solstice day. Remember joy in dark times.
