somebody on my porch, probably wanting delivered packages
2020-Mar-19, Thursday 03:21 pmIt's been a long week. I normally work 3 days a week, but I've worked 5 this time. We're getting everybody working from home, preparing for a government official shelter-in-place order which prohibits all but essential travel. I called work off a bit early today after an online check-in with my supervisor in another state.
About 20 minutes later, I hear my patio door loudly bang. The cat skitters. I wasn't expecting a package. I look through the window to see if anyone is there. No, nobody in the patio. So I open the front door to look out. There's a guy walking away from my house. He isn't a delivery person. He gets into the passenger seat of a car. About 2 minutes later, another car pulls up. There seems to be a drug deal happening through the 2nd car's window. Both cars drive away. I filed a non-emergency report through NextDoor.com. It lets people post to the "Crime & Safety" section while simultaneously sending info to the police. I included my photo there too.
Crime seems to be up a lot this week, here in the #WarzoneInMinneapolis. Crime stats are highly variable, even in this so-called "great economy". There's a big difference, though, between this week's 16 crimes and last week's 7 crimes in my little 6-block-radius Jordan neighborhood.
I can't tell by this ArcGIS ShotSpotter map, but gunfire seems to be up this week too with even kids firing their guns. On that map, use the green icon to add the "2-week" layer. It shows a blue star over by the local hospital. That's worrying. For extra fun, add the full year's layer of gunfire activity. You can't see the map anymore from all the (literal?) bullet points.
And we still haven't received the government shelter-in-place order that prohibits all but essential travel. I hope that Universal Basic Income deposit arrives soon, so it gives increasingly desperate people something to do other than steal stuff.
