the weather
2021-Feb-14, Sunday 08:18 amThere are more interesting things to discuss, but I'll settle in this moment on the weather.
When I woke up this morning, the air temperature in Jordan neighborhood in Minneapolis was -29C/-20F (wind chill -40C/-40F). I don't know if it got as cold as -46C/-50F air temp elsewhere like it did in northern Minnesota yesterday. They could get frost bite in only 5 minutes. We're warm here; it takes a whole 10 minutes to get frost bite in Minneapolis this weekend.
It's still plenty cold, though. There's no way my leaky house would ever stay warm, so I rely on electric blankets to get me through the nights (fitted sheet) and days (blanket on a chair in front of the television).
The bitter cold isn't stopping the usual nonsense around here. A car alarm went off next door at 1:22am last night. It was loud and close enough that the cat even left the warm confines underneath the blanket with me in bed to go stand alert. She only crawls under the blankets with me during the extreme cold. And about 3 hours earlier, somebody with a gun held up a business at the corner where I used to walk to the local pharmacy (before it shut down).
There's a local non-profit that tries to care for the basic necessities of people in the homeless camps here. They already received sufficient donations to immediately get people into hotel rooms during the cold last week, but I threw $100 at them anyway for their general fund in case of ongoing issues like this. It's a sad state of affairs that we can't build a society with a functioning political and economic system, so we have to rely on donations for this stuff.
We're supposed to have flying cars and fulltime leisure study thanks to the robot economy fulfilling our basic needs. But, here we are in 2021 needing donations to provide basic shelter from deadly weather.
