a few items of note
2022-Aug-03, Wednesday 02:03 pmYesterday, we had heat index temperatures of 40C/104F here in Minneapolis. Air temperature was much lower, but the humidity made it seem worse, hence the heat index. Afterwards, storms came through very late at night and knocked out power sometime after 2am for much of the Twin Cities metropolitan area. Xcel Energy restored power at my house around 1pm today. My upstairs bedroom window air conditioner is trying to restore cool in the house now, and my refrigerator is cooling down again. Luckily the storm front brought much nicer temperatures with it.
I closed my 401K account last week. I had them take out 20% for federal taxes and some other amount for state taxes. The deposit finally showed up in my checking account for about $36K. I owe $34K on my house, so today after power was restored, I immediately logged in and paid $33K on my remaining debt. Once that clears, then I'll figure out how to close it out altogether. Doing so should very noticeably lower my monthly costs, making my savings last even longer. (Assuming no disasters happen in the coming months.) I don't have the mental stamina this week to deal with closing everything now, so I'm putting it off to another week by maintaining the < $1K on my mortgage for now.
In theory, because I turn 55 this year, I shouldn't have to pay another 10% fee to the federal government for the early withdrawal of my 401K. If I turn out to be wrong, I'll deal with that crisis later.
Someone on Reddit noticed that Scott Adams was making fun of Long Covid in his Dilbert comic strip. Others noted that he is a jerk in real life. I added that I got blocked by him on Twitter a few months ago. It's weird what accomplishments we can find to be proud of.
