I never rely on American media for my political news, especially as it relates to the war in Iraq.  (I've already boycotted Fox media in all its forms. I want corporations with at least a little more accountability for their product.)  For years now, I've practiced getting my news from various international sources. My science news still tends to be produced in America, but for random information (including political) I usually rely on BBC to give me my occasional dose.

I sometimes wander to other sources, including Al Jazeera English.  Somehow, I missed this important story that Chicago traffic was affected in November 2006 by an American who burned himself by the highway in protest of the war in Iraq. How did I miss that news?

Follow this Al Jazeera English webpage for the brief text story, or jump directly to their "Part 2" video on YouTube. The video includes interviews of people who knew this guy, Malachi Ritscher.

I realize that late 2006 is when my work life started getting very stressful what with working 7 days a week for a month straight, but I'm still disappointed in myself for not remembering (or noticing?) this story from 2006.  :(

Yeah, it was buried.
I put up a post about it not long after it happened. I wanted to spread the word, to make people aware of what this one man did in protest. I couldn't stand the thought of his death going unnoticed, but it never did get the attention it should have had, not just locally, but nation wide.
