the snow in 2019

It's been an odd winter. We had almost no snow cover throughout January, then the month's typical total finally arrived in the last few days. And it hasn't stopped. February 2019 was the snowiest February in Minnesota history and the 4th snowiest month ever. The state has earned cold and wind chill records, and some highways have been closed due to blizzard conditions.

The weather has provided some interesting photos, videos, and memes. Things like this Amish guy skiing behind his horsedrawn buggy, or a local meterologist asking who's tired of snow using a meme with raised mittens poking out of snow banks. Whoever runs the social media for South Saint Paul Police Department often has fun with it, but they even made the Best Of Minnesota twitter feed recently.

"When it's snowing out you NEED to give yourself extra stopping distance. When it's snowing and slick out, it doesn't matter if you have 4 wheel drive Karen, your Suburbitank will plow right into Jan's Prius."

In case you think we're merely joking in Minnesota about our weather, two weeks later an actual military tank got stuck, prompting a local police department to warn all motorists:

"There is currently a tank, yes a literal military tank that got stuck on our roads last night when the National Guard was trying to help stranded motorists. If a tank cannot make it you probably should not try."

snow Minneapolis 2019 March 03There is so much snow in Minneapolis that the city has implemented parking restrictions until April. I can no longer park in front of my house at all, or I'd risk getting towed. There just isn't enough space in the roads for 2 rows of parked cars and an emergency vehicle trying to travel between them, so parking on even-numbered sides of streets is prohibited until the snow finally melts... optimistically estimated for April 1st. Just on the 1st day of March, we received half of our usual monthly total snowfall.

In this morning's photo from my front door, you can see that snow is basically at the top steps of every house. It's the same at my front door too. That's about a meter of snow everywhere, higher where the plows have pushed it.

The dog has stopped creating tracks all over the back yard. Now there are only a few trails where he has plowed through the snow to create a loop around the back yard. He pees onto the tall sides of the pathways. There will be a whole lot of poop for me to clean up when all of this snow finally melts. I haven't gone into the back yard for about 6 weeks already.

Forecasters are already warning about flooding in Minnesota this year. The cold air means that all the water will stay frozen now, then it will melt quickly later in the spring. The air temperature right now in Minneapolis at 10:30am is -22C/-7F (wind chill -32C/-26F).

I hope spring arrives a lot sooner this year than it did last year.
