interesting... i've never heard of someone using something like valtrex for canker sores. i have a family history of canker sores, and used to get them regularly, so i've done a lot of research and experimented with different possible remedies. the thing which made a huge difference for me was switching toothpastes. once i moved to a toothpaste without sodium lauryl sulfate, my canker sore incidence dropped by about 95%, and when i did get them, they went away more quickly.
although i've not read about antiherpetic meds as a tool against canker sores, one other thing which i've found that can help is starting high doses of the amino acid lysine (not ridiculously high, but double or triple the normal dose) as soon as the canker sore starts coming on. lysine is also used as a folk remedy to reduce the duration and severity of herpes outbreaks.
so even if HSV isn't the cause of canker sores, there may be some similar underlying physical process between the two conditions.
