We had our first frost on September 30th.  Today, we had our first snow on October 10th.

Gosh, you get snow in early October. Its not uncommon here in Charlotte for it not to snow at all during the winter.

The natives don't mind so much the long snow season. What drives some of them batty, however, are the winter seasons in which snow arrives and then fails to melt until April. It does wear on the psyche to deal with the white blanket for so long. Snow/melt breaks are much easier to endure.

I could imagine. My ideal winters would be the ones I had growing up on Long Island, NY. It wasn't snowed in all winter, but we got a couple of good snows in every year. Snow is best when it only comes around on occasion, then you enjoy it, appreciate its beauty then it melts.

I remember when I first moved to North Carolina in the late 80s it would snow at least once or twice in the winter. Then starting in the 90s when global average temps started to rise snow has pretty much become a rare thing. This past winter, as I remember, was the first time in snowed (more than flurries) here in like 4 years.

I despise snow. I grew up in upstate New York. Just out side of Syracuse. 105 inches of snow a year, average. We would often get a foot or two at a time. That doesn't count the blizzards, or the week of -20 degree weather in January. Cold and white for months at a time. Then the sun would come out and everything was blinding white capped with cold blue. And of course there was the ice. I used to be bruised from shoulders to knees most of the winter from falling down all the time. I moved away from that over 20 years ago and to this day I still can not watch a winter scene in a movie or look at a picture of winter landscapes without shuddering.
