As a followup to Friday's post about wealth versus paper, I offer you a snippet of survival tips in this month's Popular Mechanics magazine.
beer is wealth

That's right.  The number one survival tip is to forget money and use beer as a store of value instead.

Beer is wealth.  *laugh*

Great advice, and not something I'd heard before, although one problem with beer is that it ages rapidly. It's hard to manage a large stockpile. Whiskey is more compact and more durable. We personally favor red wine, although our stash is diminishing steadily. ;-)

Another good bet is tins of sardines. They're roughly bill-sized, albeit a bit heavier, so they're highly portable and pack a lot of calories that taste real good when you're hungry. They are already a common currency in prisons.

Bullets are also commonly cited as a currency candidate, as they do pack a lot of value in a small space, but it's not common to trade them in transient disasters like hurricanes, it's more of an armageddon thing.

But whiskey - at least, a 750ml or litre bottle - is a significantly "higher denomination" than a case of beer. How do you make change? ;)
