mellowtiggerI was trying to organize my many website bookmarks into a comprehensible structure. Then my motherboard died, I reinstalled the operating system, and I lost my many unsaved bookmarks. *sigh* I was looking into free products to help me backup my bookmarks and access them even from other pcs. During my search, I stumbled upon a strange little Firefox browser add-on called "pearltrees".
Pearltrees allows me to store my bookmarks on their server but also to organize the bookmarks into visual 2D structures with nodes branching out from other nodes. I can also cross-list websites into more than one node branch. I can search for a topic (or a website), see everyone else's nodes on the same topic, and go off wandering their own tree of information. It's like a web search engine pre-organized by fellow hobbyists! It's a really neat idea for getting to relevant and useful webpages very quickly.
Sadly, the add-on leaves the browser in a totally un-browser-like state. The url address bar actually disappears. VERY unfriendly! If this is what they plan to do with a long-familiar interface, then they should just release a separate application to replace the browser altogether. In spite of this big drawback, I haven't removed the program yet. I think that it has potential.

Hint: "new pearltree" will add an empty placeholder node for your tree, while "new pearl" will connect a website address to the node. Right-click a node to get additional options.
Does anyone know a product that works similarly (organize, backup, and share websites)? I'm willing to investigate them too.
My tonsils are swollen and sore tonight, although my temperature is barely apparent. I may go to bed early rather than continue organizing my new bookmark collection. Check back this weekend. They should be filled out by then.

Once this is set up, you can log in on any computer and it's all there for you.
