getting old

I've been commuting to work by bicycle for a month now. I'm still waiting for that muscle buildup that will make the trip easier. I assume it's an "age thing" that makes the change so much slower now than it used to be in years past. When I massage my hamstrings, I get that tender pain-tingle of stressed muscles. It's been that way for nearly a month, though, and there's no muscle buildup that I can detect.
It's also taking longer each morning to get that "sleep wash" effect out of my eyes. It's that fuzzy image that results when there are tears in the eyes that mess up the focal point. No matter how much I rub my eyes, though, it doesn't go away. I just have to wait it out. I think the longest wait has been a full hour before my vision is back to normal. I figure I must be sleeping with the weight of my head distorting the shape of my eyeballs against the pillow. Apparently reduced elasticity makes it take longer for my eyeballs to rebound to their normal shape.
I'm also keeping my attention on an age spot on my arm. I've had so many freckle-agespot discolorations for so many years, it's hard to keep track of them all. This one, though, feels a little rough to the touch. If I notice any changes, I'll be sure to visit the doctor for a quick check on it. Assuming, of course, the state government shutdown doesn't last very long so my (state taxpayer supported) health insurance actually works.
At least with the long holiday weekend to rest up alone in the house (all three roommates spent days out at the local sci-fi convention), I experienced a burst of energy that helped me accomplished some overdue chores.

- I got some bricks and wood logs dug up from one side of the yard that needs to return to grass.
- I rode my bicycle to the grocery store and hauled back food, then I made stew in the crockpot to last me all week.
- I scrubbed the bathroom counters and tub.
- I removed the axle from my front bicycle wheel, cleaned the ball bearings, and put in new grease.
