mellowtigger: (we can do it)
I saw this job posting for my North Minneapolis area.  It's work that I could do.  It's work that I care about.  It's here in NOMI (North Minneapolis), where I desperately want to actually do something that helps.  Yes, I applied for the job.  :)

The job application asked this question in a required text field:

In your own words how would you describe North Minneapolis?

I wrote the following:

I've lived here over 5 years.  I care about helping the people who are already here (not replacing them with other people).  I converted my front yard to strawberries and raspberries for everyone to eat and enjoy.  The young kids easily learn what plants to look for and when.  I sweep up broken glass in the street and throw away crack paraphernalia from the house next door.  I report bullet casings in my alley to the police.  I believe NOMI could be a nice place to live, if everyone actually believed they each had a personal stake in its future.

That's weird, right?  I mean every single word of it passionately.  I've written about all of these incidents on this blog over the years.  I've never applied for a job with that emotional content tied to it.
