trash day

We had rain yesterday, and that water cleared away the last of the snow on my property.  Okay, maybe there's a handful of snow here and there, in shady spots.  Clear ground, however, signals that it's time to clear away the accumulated trash of the winter season.  The whole time I was outdoors this morning, there was drama on the street at the drug house at the end of the block.  It was mostly a man and woman yelling on the sidewalk and street.  It wasn't until I moved to the back yard that I heard car tires screeching away.

The haul of garbage this year included all of the usual tobacco labels, fast food trash, and beer cans or bottles.  It also had an unusual number of cigarette butts.  People still smoke cigarettes?  I guess I hadn't noticed in a long while.  I picked up 2 used surgical masks.  That was brand new for the pandemic era.  I also collected glass bottles (mostly intact) for peach schnapps, vodka, and cinnamon whiskey.  My yard collects 2 full bags of trash every winter.

I received my first packet of seeds in the mail this week.  Although the snow disappeared, it will still be weeks before the ground stops being solid ice.  It's always weird, every year, to feel the warm sun and see the bare ground, knowing that if I take out a shovel then all I'll get for the effort will be a loud...

*CLANG*

... as the shovel hits solid ice where it seems like strawberries and other plants are right there, growing out of it.  There's a lot of yardwork that needs to happen this year, because I didn't do it last year.

Maybe next month, I'll finally get to do some overdue and therapeutic gardening.
