low standards of self-preservation
2021-Mar-30, Tuesday 04:41 pmIt's funny how I've changed by living in the #WarzoneInMinneapolis.
A week ago, some residents in a suburban area of the Twin Cities received a notification on their phones to shelter in place due to a shooter. I genuinely thought it was hilarious. That's what we call a Tuesday here. If they did that sort of thing for NOMI (North Minneapolis), our phones would never shut up. I know, because I disabled all notifications from the Citizen app to prevent constant harassment from its warnings.
Yesterday, I was at work and took a photo of a misbehaving computer's screen, so I could share it with another technician. As I uploaded that image from my phone, I noticed an interesting warning from that Citizen app I mentioned. There was somebody with a gun at the street address for the crack house next door to my place. At the time, I was in the office, so the location shows as 3.3 miles away.
Oh, North Minneapolis, you never fail to entertain.
This day was also when the Derek Chauvin trial truly began in downtown Minneapolis a few blocks from where I work. The landlord emailed some links to tenants, which were shared with employees. Useful info, so I'm also sharing here.
That's where I lost the ability to respond. I tried several draft emails in response. Even the most politely worded version that I could craft...
... still sounded rude to me. They were being reasonably cautious about 2 hours after I saw the notice of somebody with a gun at the crack house next door to me, and I was feeling dismissive of their worries. That's when I realized just how low my standards of self-preservation have become.
I'd much rather take my chances with rioters out to destroy property than spend time around people intending to murder other people. At home.

They're preparing for any potential disruptions to business, which is fine, maybe. I still think it's pointless until an actual verdict is ready to be announced. That's when I'm prepared to measure my level of concern. But then some other essential employees I work with, they began to wonder if maybe the first of us to arrive each day should notify others that "the coast is clear", so to speak, so others know it's safe to come in.https://www.mplsdowntown.com/trial/

Work is safer for me than home, so I'm coming in every Monday during the trial.
