some minor gaming news
2022-Apr-19, Tuesday 05:37 pmMy recently expanded game partition on my tower computer at home is now 5 Terabytes. (That's a lot of space.) It seems like "too much" for gaming, right? But I just ran a quick scan of my current Steam folder. The top 3 games are using 0.46TB total. The next dozen together are using 0.61TB.
That's 1.07TB of storage, just for 15 games. Seriously. That's not including Star Citizen in a Lutris folder that by itself uses 0.08TB. Gaming requires a lot of storage. Sure, it's old news, but I feel "comfy" in my new 5TB partition. I'm starting to wonder, though, if it's possible to use external storage successfully with computer games? I just don't know. I want to miniaturize my setup, but the storage seems to be a limiting factor.
And, not to broach the topic that must not be named (for a few more months), but Jimquisition came down with Covid-19. That's the YouTube channel where I get most of my gaming industry news. Their video on the topic of this illness is filled with the usual creatively expressive cursing. The most notable point, though, is that they left the USA to return to the UK, just to avoid the awfulness of the USA healthcare system in case things got bad.
I understand completely. I still believe that someday the USA can be a first world country again. I don't know by what measure we qualify today. Except for... you know... first world problems like worrying how much space my computer games use.
