new Minnesota flag

Minnesota has a new flag. That's good, because our previous one was literally the worst flag in the nation (a very entertaining YouTube video worth watching). The new one leaves me feeling sort of "meh", but it's definitely a lot better than the old one. There were a lot of submissions for the flag redesign, and none of the ones that I liked made it to the final round. As CGP Grey noted in this video about the last 3 finalists for our new flag, a state seal should include icons for the thing they represent, but the state flag should not. The state flag design instead should try to become a new icon.

As such, this flag is what we will soon have as Minnesota's replacement flag. The symbolism changed over time and redesign. It includes a K-shaped (like Minnesota itself) dark blue field, with an 8-point star on it which evokes the northern star motif (as the northernmost contiguous state). The rest of the flag is filled with the inverted triangle of light blue, either for the prairie sky or for the 10,000 lakes here. I don't know which.

It's fine. As someone else noted, it looks like something that Captain America could wear, since it's much like one of the many costumes worn by this comic book hero. But I suppose that "Winter Soldier" movie association also is a good match for cold Minnesota.
