movie review (NSFW)

A local theater (the Uptown), shows a midnight movie every Saturday night. I've seen many good movies there, and I've seen some enjoyably-bad movies too. Tonight's movie was in that second category. I managed to convince [personal profile] foeclan  and another roommate to go with me tonight to see 1978's "The Disco Dolls In Hot Skin in 3-d". Unfortunately, the review needs to go behind a cut tag, because it was technically an "x" rated movie. Further reading will not be safe for most work environments...

It's a 70s flick, and it shows in clothing, hair styles, dialog, and even in an old rotary-dial pay phone. The music, thankfully, is much better than modern porn music. "Toe-tappingly good", as I commented at one point. The film was primarily a drama rather than a porn. Supposedly there was even an R-rated version of it released, so it had to have some kind of plot to fill the screen time. It was a LOT of dialog for a porn film, spending little time with naked people in bed. I'm impressed that the actors kept up as well as they did.

My favorite line:
man explaining his loss of erection earlier: "I guess I was just intimidated by you."
woman: *childish voice* "What does that mean?"

The audience laughed enthusiastically at this point, just like me. I think that's the point where I choked on my root beer as she spoke her line. In fact, the crowd was very participatory throughout the whole film. These midnight movies are like that. Not as noisy as "Rocky Horror Picture Show", but definitely interactive.

It was mostly an amusing/entertaining film, but there were two scenes that had the opposite effect.  There was the obligatory orgy scene with John Holmes.  He had no speaking role and no actual role in the plot either.  I just kept wondering though, "How many of the other people in this orgy are dead now from AIDS?"  It was a pre-HIV era, so not a condom in sight anywhere.  The other bizarre scene was the guy who was having sex with a woman (the one anal scene in the film), then he drowned her in a bucket of soup, then he continued fucking her.  It seemed to be meant to appear gross (much of the audience reacted badly too), but it was still just a weird thing to add to the movie.

There were lots of non-sequiturs in the film. Some of it was horrendously bad editing. Some of it was missing frames from tears in the film during decades of theater showings. Some of it was the really bad script. The movie would jump from people talking with their clothes on to suddenly showing them already well into screwing around. Not much time spent on most sex scenes, as they had to get to the orgasm quickly so they could move on to the rest of the plot advancement again.

The 3d sucked. In the bad way. The red view (right eye) was very bad. It was in focus, yes, but it was at least a double image and maybe more. When the view got disorienting or painful, I would just squint my right eye and watch the film in the blue view (left eye) for a while. There was, however, one especially memorable 3d scene which I will remember as "The Dominatrix' Dildo of Doom!"

My favorite 3d moment:
It's a scene where two women are going at it in bed (after drinking the "magic lesbian juice" (as [personal profile] foeclan  called it) that energized their woman-on-woman libidos) when the observing dominatrix finally brings in the vibrator. She extends her arm straight towards the camera, twisting her hand on the same axis, so you see this vibrator coming at you from the screen, turning hypnotically.

There was one attempt to do something semi-artistic with the 3d effect. It was a daydream sort of situation. A man sat at the end of a table, a woman writhed seductively on top of the table, with a mirror behind the table so you got the row-upon-row of reflections curving away from view. If the 3d effect was working properly, it might have actually been an interesting shot.

The sex scenes were okay. Pretty tame by today's standards, I suppose. At one point somebody (*pretends ignorance*) said, "Is it bad that I think I could do a better job at that?" *laugh* Still, it was nice to see guys that were NOT all buff.  Not all of the men were horsehung, and the women did not sport enormous bouncy breasts either.  It was nice to see both genders with unshaved crotches. Shaving always looks pre-pubescent to me, and that creeps me out. Natural is better, for me at least.

There are lots of other "memorable" (funny, disorienting, silly, weird) moments, but you really should go see it for yourself sometime. :)

I consider the price I paid for admission to be money well spent for my entertainment tonight.
