It took about 90 minutes on this laptop just to download and install the single Windows XP service pack 3. I'd just grit my teeth through all the hard drive thrashing. XP shouldn't run on a 256MB machine. I ended up just going to watch tv for a while and coming back when it was all done. So I'm strongly leaning to rebuilding a new machine as soon as possible.

I spent some time matching pieces of equipment for an unintended purchase. Here's my current build plan.  Motherboard has a power management feature, just not as extensive as the one I was wanting to wait for.  DDR2 memory has lower power requirements (and essentially the same performance) than DDR3 which I'm avoiding.  Power supply is 80+ certified for power efficiency.

And it still kicks butt, as they say.  I like playing the min/max game.  High performance with low initial cost and also low longterm power cost compared with the other alternatives out there.

If I'd known this mishap was ahead (my main pc died tonight I've been unsuccessful in restoring it), I wouldn't have spent the money to get a new hard drive or to schedule the optometrist tomorrow morning  for eyeglasses.  Ah well.

Debt, debt, debt.  I'm an American now.  Yay!

Note to self:   NO getting ill.  NO car troubles.  For the REST of the year.
