i hope this car survives the night
2020-Oct-29, Thursday 03:23 pmConspicuous wealth is bad. Both in general as a moral issue, and specifically in my neighborhood as a safety issue.
I had to leave my car at the repair shop today. It's a simple problem that will cost about a thousand dollars to fix. I can't put gas in the gas tank. Well, I can, but it's not easy. Gas pumps detect backwards gas flow and immediately stop pumping as soon as they start pumping. I haven't actually filled the tank this month, because I always grow tired of clicking repeatedly for squirt after small squirt of gasoline from the nozzle. It's straightforward to fix. The assembly that needs replacement is small, but it will still cost nearly a thousand dollars when it's all done. They had to keep the car overnight because the current assembly (needed for gas to leave the tank properly) is already removed. They expect the part to arrive overnight and will continue repairs tomorrow.
So... I got a loaner car. A luxuriously nice loaner car. Compared to my bullet-ridden, rusted-out, broken door, old 2001 car, this newfangled thing is a technological wonder. I've never even seen a key like this before. Gone are the keys of old.
So this pretty car is now sitting in front of my house. It is alone on the street right now, due to leaves being swept earlier today by the city. Nobody else has moved their cars back in front of their houses yet.
Conspicuous wealth is bad. I hope this car survives the night.
Edit: 2020 October 30 Friday
It survived the night. There are still fewer cars on the block this morning than usual, but I didn't even see any scratches on the loaner car this morning. I have my old car back, and the gas tank is working properly again. It was almost $600 just for the "fuel vapor storage canister" alone, because it comes as part of a whole assembly that had to be replaced. I'm pleased, though. I won't have to stand in the Minnesota winter for 15 minutes trying to click-click-click my way to refill the gas tank this winter.
Edit: 2020 October 31 Saturday
There were about 7 gunshots last night, just barely outside the range where I call 911 to report them. One of the thoughts that crossed my mind after deciding not to call: I'm glad I have only the rust bucket in front of my house again.
P.S. He died.
