Expedition 3 in No Man's Sky

mellowtiggerIn case you didn't know (I certainly didn't know at first), Expedition 3 is now live in No Man's Sky. It offers a lot of plants that you can add to your base, so I definitely wanted the rewards unlocked on my account. It should be available for another month, but it definitely takes many hours to complete. I maybe spent 14 hours in my winning playthrough? But I'm easily distracted by exploration.
It has bugs.
Hint 1: Before you start, go to your configuration options for networking and DISABLE the multiplayer option. Only after that's done, then start a NEW game for the Expedition 3 option. Trust me, that early prevention will save you major headaches. I deleted my first game after 5 or 6 hours, because I realized I was hopelessly inconvenienced. I created a new game, and resources that I'd searched so hard for previously were now available nearby. Much easier.
Hint 2: Deadly storms are frequent, and you start only with basic building blocks for a house. The game won't immediately recognize your new structure as safe housing. You still get harmed by the storm. :( Save the game progress, exit the game fully, then come back to it later. Magically, your crude house is now a safe space like it should have been from the beginning. You also can use your broken ship for safe space from the storm (and recharge your environment shield) or simply dig a hole to escape the worst of the storm effects.
Hint 3: Harvest those Buried Technology Modules every time you see one. Unlock the Galactic Trade Terminal first, then unlock the 3-slot large refiner as soon as possible. You'll need it to create Herox using one of the recipes for it. Don't spend your modules on other stuff like I did. *sigh* Also unlock the mineral extractor and supply depot. You'll need them too.
Hint 4: Go into caves every chance you get, and harvest those minerals. You need some rare silver, gold, or platinum to complete that Herox recipe.
Hint 5: Look for deep water. You'll need to identify plants and minerals there to complete some necessary quest steps.
Hint 6: Eventually, you lose access to the full crafting tree from your base computer. It just stops, with no warning. At that point, you have to leave the planet in your spaceship. Out in space, summon the Anomaly (you don't have to do the long quest process for it), then you can use the station there to unlock more crafting tree recipes.
If you watch Twitch streaming today (and tomorrow) for a little while, you can earn some unlocks for rewards in-game. I missed the first 3 days of it, because... who knew? It's stuff you can earn on your own. There's nothing unique to Twitch or this Expedition 3, so it's just a convenience. Be sure to pick a Twitch video stream that says "Drops Enabled".
