Too much of my healthcare over the years/decades has been happenstance.

Like the doctor I saw only 1 time who, as an afterthought (thinking outside the box) walked back to me after the exam was done but before I left the clinic, decided to prescribe metronidazole before a procedure.  I don't remember his name, only that he was (Asian-)Indian.  His decision cured a decade+ of severe diarrhea.

Like the doctor I saw only 1 time who, as part of a string of suggestions (thinking outside the box), decided to mention gluten as a cause for my worsening nerve damage.  I didn't remember her name, only that she filled in that one day and ultimately solved my nerve problem.

I've had a lot of awful doctors who actively prevented me from finding causes and solutions to my problems.

Today, I used online records to track down Dr Kerri Lamberty, previously at Noran Neurologic where I was trying to solve my nerve damage issues back in 2010 and 2014.  My regular doctor there could only confirm that the nerve damage was worse on EMGs done those 4 years apart, but that "the pattern does not match multiple sclerosis".  He seemed to give up on further investigative work, actually telling me, "Come back when you're falling down." He was on vacation during one of my appointments, and Dr Lamberty filled in for him that day.  She's the only one who actually helped me.

Anyway, I was thinking about it today, glad that the muscle twitches and muscle cramps are gone... as long as I maintain a gluten-free diet.  They slowly (over a course of weeks) return when I break my diet, and they slowly (again, requiring weeks) recede when I resume it.  A doctor by that name works at a different clinic now.  Their website had a number to call to leave feedback.  I wanted to let her know that her suggestion almost a decade ago was the correct diagnosis.  I got an answering service instead, so I'll call back tomorrow when I can speak directly to the administrator there.

Edit: I called on Monday and used the phone tree to eventually reach the right person, but they had a message that they were out of the office on vacation for the rest of the week.  Rather than risk being cut off by a message time limit, I decided to hang up and call back next week.  I hope I remember.
