Today's post is a paean to the animals who are NOT here.

The big news (good news) for recent weeks is "empty cat cages"!  Not just a few here and there, but rows of them.  Thankfully, the flood of new felines brought to our doors has finally slowed.  So congratulations to the many animals who found new homes, and kudos to the people who came to our sites during their search for a new family member.

An important addendum (and more good news) is that Mission Meow appears to me to be a big success.  Cats were delivered to foster homes during the over-crowded summer season, and now it's time for them to come back to our sites for another opportunity at adoption.  Again, congratulations to the cats for making it this far, and thanks to the humans who volunteered to shelter the animals temporarily while we couldn't.

Meanwhile, there is also some good non-feline news.

This week I saw Priscilla, Queen of the Desert Rats, leave for a new home.  She was a beautiful middle-aged (3 years old) gerbil.  She had a beautiful two-tone coat of yellow and white that was very nice to look at.  She was a very friendly and inquisitive lady.  I hope she ended up with a child owner, since I'm sure she'll be a very peaceful companion for them to share time with.  She was royalty, for sure.

It seemed unusual in recent weeks to see so many puppies appear in the shelter.  Most of them disappeared very quickly to new owners, but Sophia hung around several days longer than I expected.  If people are browsing all of our sites online first, rather than showing up in person, maybe it's that this non-photogenic picture didn't help her out.

In person, she was far more adorable than this photo would suggest.  Sophia was a young (8 weeks old) Siberian husky.  I never heard her voice, but she was playful and inquisitive.  She came up to her cage bars to nibble and paw at my fingers, and she kept a curious eye out to all the commotion around her.  She was gentle and adorable.  I'm glad that she finally found a new home, especially after her littermates all found homes first.

Next edition:  I'll relate a story about installing a new Windows profile on a machine while I had a cat in my lap that was staring at a pig that came wandering through the doorway to squeal at us.   (I like my job.)
