gardening contentment
2009-Apr-04, Saturday 04:33 pmEven though it was still below freezing this morning (snow forecast for tomorrow), and it's been overcast all afternoon, still...
Blueberry lager and a shovel, that's definitely my calling. I just spent several hours outside digging in the dirt while sipping two beers. Good stuff. I transplanted several things, planted seeds for others, and raised by a few inches the logs that I park my car on (they had sunk down a lot this last year).
I don't think this is happiness, but I'm pretty sure that it is contentment. I have too much of a buzz (after only 2 beers) to drive out for a Papa Murphy's pizza, but I'm feeling pretty good about life at the moment. I wish I had an acre or two to plant!
It's still too soon to plant the seeds that I've sprouted indoors. Weather.com says that next Wednesday night is the last night with an average low of freezing temperature. Thursday morning I may be outside doing some more digging. :)
Why does this activity produce such good feelings? Mother Nature developed us to do things that are very different from "the daily grind".

Date: 2009-Apr-07, Tuesday 02:33 am (UTC)Last week and the week before I did some transplanting of some potted plants who reside in my back yard. They are looking at me very happy now. Aaahhh... breathing room they said, from their new larger pots.
I think someone should suggest a new diagnosis for the next Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. "Nature Deprivation Syndrome." I wonder but what some, many, or most of our social problems are due to being so chronically separated from nature. "Boot-camp" for delinquent adolescents helps them, among other things, due to the contact with nature.
I sure feel better after a nice long hike in nature.
Thoughts....
