Story:  Back when I worked at Wilson's Leather, the chain store would have sales that were abbreviated BOGO.  They were "buy one, get one" free deals on merchandise.  Well, now AHS is trying something similar with cats during the busy summer breeding season.  If someone adopts any cat or kitten now through September 30th, they can take advantage of our "Double the Love" program to get a second cat (older than 1 year) with no charge for the adoption fee.  I was skeptical, but it turns out to have made a very big difference.  Here it is in busy cat season, but I go into the cat area and find plenty of empty cages instead of wall-to-wall felines.  This turnaround is great news for the cats!  I'm certain that our euthanasia rates for this year will show a very marked reduction, and this BOGO deal will play a large part of that improvement.  (There's also Mission Meow which sends older cats out to foster homes for the summer, too.)  My thanks to everyone who's participated in this new program by bringing a second animal home.

TankAnimals:  One trend that I'm noticing with the cats here now is that a lot of them are black.  Don't let that phase you, though, as they are still quite adorable.  I walked into one of the group rooms with several black cats into it.  I kneeled down to pet the closest critter.  Tank watched a few moments and then climbed down from his high perch to crawl up into my lap and my shoulder.  He's quite the loveable guy.  Very soft too.

MayThere have been an unusual number of siamese coming through our doors too.  Yesterday, the only one that I saw left was May.  She was also a friendly cat.  I'm not sure why she's still at our shelter instead of a new home.  It might be because she's a longhair variety and that's putting people off of spending time to meet her.

Come visit to see if either of these animals (or our other furry guests) spark your interest.  There are lots of personable animals needing homes.

As of this writing, both Tank and May are available for visitation and adoption at our Golden Valley facility.

How you can help:  Here is a very simple suggestion to help reduce the number of animals without homes.  Remind yourself and other pet owners to NOT take animals outdoors on July 4th for the social festivities.  Animals get spooked and run away, then during the next few days people surrender to shelters the lost animals that they find.  Save the animals and the shelters the misfortune by reminding everyone to treat their furry friends responsibly and keep them indoors during the fireworks displays.
