the historical source of racism
2020-Nov-15, Sunday 04:12 pmI called 911 again last night. I woke up around 2:30am to 6 gunshots. It was at the edge of what I consider "close enough to call". I learned about 15 minutes later when it reached the Citizen app that the shots were about 2.5 blocks away. There were 6 more about 3am, farther away. And some more after 4am, even farther away.
I'm still trying to figure out the situation with Minneapolis and its police budget. It seems unnecessarily complicated, including the extra $0.5 million recently given to the police to handle the very real surge in gun violence here, despite criticism.
Meanwhile, I'm still devoted to dismantling institutional racism. That seems to be the only way we'll make any progress, considering how entwined the racist ideals are with the institutions that people seem so devoted to fund instead of social programs. To better understand racism, I recommend this 18-minute video about the exact historical source of today's idea of race. Note its purpose.
In school, back in 7th grade history class, we learned about "Gold, God, and Glory" being the motivators behind the colonization of the American continents. My teacher was quick to add, "... and not necessarily in that order." When you worship wealth, then a whole lot of bad behavior can be excused and even encouraged.
It's the same today, and we need to stop it. We need to build better institutions and a better society.
