cirque du soleil: alegria
2010-Jun-24, Thursday 12:26 amI want to feel my body change under gravity that flows. I want to swing at the end of a massively long pendulum, riding a trapeze bar through the air in arcs larger than any house I've ever lived in. I want to swirl and bounce, playing at the ends of bungie ropes while I run feverishly around in circles then leap into the air to trace spirals through space as competing forces tease my body toward their preferred paths.
I need a huge barn and lots of bungie rope, so it's not going to happen. It was so very nice to think about it for a while though.
If you ever have the opportunity to see Cirque Du Soleil in a live performance, take it. It's much better than watching them on television screen. Videography requires bright white lights for clear viewing. That whitewashed landscape can't possibly compete with the sparkles and flourescence and dancing shadows of a stage performance. The live music and singing were equally wonderful.
I went to see Cirque Du Soleil: Alegria in downtown Minneapolis tonight. I got a pair of free tickets at work as a thank you for my efforts to organize fur donations to the Gulf oil spill cleanup effort. I offered the other seat to
dangerdhotrod since he takes classes and performs circus work on his own already. (Unsurprisingly, he found someone from his work/class group just a few seats away from us.) Except for a minor incident where security wouldn't let us enter the stadium with an umbrella even though it was a rainy day, it was a very entertaining evening. If you get a chance, I recommend that you see the show.
The small part that totally mesmerized me might bore most people. Hula hoops. There's always a woman working hula hoops, isn't there? I thought it was merely an interesting display of dexterity up until the point where 5 hoops were circling various points not quite in the same column... silver hoops shining white arcs as they danced wonderful oval orbits... flashing bright yellow and blue brilliance from the colored spotlights... patterns within patterns like living orrery. I wish that moment could've lasted longer. It was beautiful.

Someday... when I win the lottery... after I buy a lottery ticket.
