You ever looked at the wintersowing forum on gardenweb.com? I usually do the seeds in a milkjug outdoors thing, although I haven't started anything so far this year. Late as usual. And we are still in this pesky drought, no outside watering allowed. I think I might buy a rainbarrel ASAP.
Anyway, the milkjugs are old-ladyish, and that's exactly who showed me how to do that 30-something years ago. It works like a charm, like a mini-greenhouse, and unlike trying to do it inside (without grow lights), the little seedlings grow up fat and sturdy. What I've gleaned from that forum is that Miracle-Gro potting mix works best, because it's got fertilizer built-in (it's at, ugh, Wal-Mart), and that keeping a mosquito dunk in a watering can and watering with that will kill those fungus gnats that kill seedlings. That'll be 10.00, please, for saving you all the time it would take to learn this.

Be sure to show us your jugs when you get them outside in the sun. *laugh*
