mellowtigger: (we can do it)

I saw part of Trump's self-congratulations this evening. I had to turn channels. Some countries had the correct response to this SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, but the USA is not among them.

I strongly recommend this 7-minute piece by PBS. I think my jaw actually fell open, seeing how well a country can react when they have knowledge workers determining policy, triggering actions, and managing plans. They were prepared for a reason: they suffered in 2003 from SARS-CoV-1. They learned better governance afterwards.

It's not just Taiwan. Look at Iceland (YouTube).  Consider Germany, which has kept its death rate comparatively low. They test 350,000 citizens per week. According to our own government, the USA hasn't tested that many people in total since this pandemic began!

In the USA, in contrast, people had to lie to the USA government about an international shipment in order to smuggle needed N95 respirators to hot-spots, so they could avoid this Republican administration confiscating material and keeping it away from needed areas. I'm not kidding:
  • The Massachusetts governor created a back channel to China via their ambassador to the United Nations.
  • New England Patriots sent a jet plane to pick up the equipment and a truck to deliver it firsthand to Massachusetts hospitals.
  • Watch the video of the truck with police escort here: https://twitter.com/NBCSports/status/1246074540720975873
That's how astonishingly bad our response has been.  I offered the suggestion that Democrats officially declare war on COVID-19, so they could eventually level charges of treason against whoever is responsible for these life-endangering seizures of medical supplies.  In case you think I'm just being an opinionated, partisan hack, then watch this Republican strategist (YouTube) suddenly see the light and try to apologize for helping to lead us all into this terrible coronavirus response.

A UK journalist is appalled at our third-world response, with our nurses wearing trash bags.  Some Australians look at the USA and scratch their heads in disbelief.

As the nation continues to face a deadly shortage of COVID-19 tests, the President is barricaded in the White House, where every person who wishes to speak with him in person must first get a rapid-test to ensure they do not have the virus. So long as his health and his political fortunes are protected, he considers his duties as President discharged.  As for the rest of Americans? They're on their own.

Trump doesn't care.  Listen to the scientists.  They know stuff.
