Together We Rise march in Minneapolis

The revolution will not be televised? There was a helicopter circling our protest/march today. I saw the big "4" on the side of the helicopter, yet there is absolutely no mention of us on the WCCO news page. No video. No overhead photo of the crowd. Nothing on their 6pm news segment. Shortly before the crowd began marching, they said on the loudspeaker that our group was on CNN at that very moment. Again, though, I can find no reference on the CNN news page. I didn't even find Unicorn Riot covering this one.
Here is the sizeable crowd that I can't find in the internet's memory this afternoon. This is my 14-second video uploaded to YouTube.
There were lots of good messages and signs. I have a hard time understanding why conservatives gets so angry and fearful of people like this. They're afraid of being given healthcare, livable wages, higher education, clean water, breathable air, and the rest? Seriously, what?! I don't get it. Look at the ages here, look at the genders, look at the skin colors... look at America. Isn't this exactly what the promise of this nation should look like? Peaceful coexistence?
And the religions. I arrived early for this event partly sponsored by a local Unitarian group. I passed this Lutheran church where the organizers were preparing themselves. I sat at a nearby spot where some Muslim women briefly conducted their noon prayer. The event began with a native American ceremony with dancers in the middle of the street. I stood behind a Buddhist banner on the march. Isn't this exactly what the promise of this nation should look like? Peaceful coexistence?
Here are the photos worth sharing. First, some shots of the damaged sites where the protest started. "We value people over property", "We all do better when we all do better" (quote from Paul Wellstone), "Abolish the police", "BLM", "Love".

My favorite site photo is this one of the 3rd police precinct headquarters (burned out) in the background. In the foreground is an old white woman carrying a large flag, "Expect Resistance", and a "Rise" flag appearing on the left.

These were my favorite individual signs: "A Healthy World For Everyone", "Count Every Vote" with Lady Liberty, and "Solidarity Is My Love Language".
People seemed ready to challenge whoever leads the nation in the coming years. "Commit To Renewable Energy", "Love Water, Not Oil", "Save The Humans", and "Stop Environmental Racism".

Some interesting groupings. "A nation built on hate and greed" near someone with USA flag; "Just Transition Now", "No New Gas Plants", and "Decommission HERC".

Some people were there for the Biden/Harris ticket. Some (like me) were not. "Yay! Dogs in the White House Again!", "F*ck Biden, Neoliberalism Is Not The Answer", "Treaty Responsibility", Democratic Socialists Of America.

Others arrived who represented different groups in this broad coalition. I saw Carpenter's Union 322 (an old white man carrying a sign for Ilhan Omar), a peacenik, and... um... a dinosaur asking us to "Keep Our Democracy Alive".

Finally, a few shots of people who were there to help during the event. "Democracy Defender: Nonviolent Peaceforce" and covid safety supples.

Everyone I saw had their mask on (properly fitted, too) and was trying to socially distance outside of their familiar group.
And I took a very unflattering photo of me, looking up my nose through my increasingly long white beard.

Stay safe out there.

Date: 2020-Nov-08, Sunday 06:22 pm (UTC)CNN included a photo from the ground. You can see one of the native American dancers from our march on the left.
Unicorn Riot apparently needed some well-deserved sleep at noon, so they could be out again for coverage beginning at night.
I still see nothing from local KARE, KSTP, or WCCO specifically about our march that blocked a major street for over an hour. Helicopters are expensive to operate. What happened to that footage? At least WCCO found some rich white people to interview while mentioning the pro-Trump protest, so there's that.
P.S. WAIT! Here's footage! Here's the protest at the very start, in front of the police station, with the dancers, before we started marching down Lake Street. I was standing somewhere to the left of the view here.
