theme song: lug-a-lug

Today's theme song is about hope in stressful times... I think.  It has no words, just vocalizations.

Last month, a musician digitized a cat's angry/fearful sounds and turned them into music.  I recommend starting there first.  It's just a 2-minute video and will give you a much better appreciation for what comes next.  If someone mentions the "Alugaluga Cat", then you'll know what they mean.

People from around the world (who have never met or performed in person together) joined in this sequel.

Humans are weird and wonderful, when they're not wasting time making their own justifications for harming each other.

cuttlefish orange with white spots, tentacles held to the sideI've used this beautiful cuttlefish image as my background picture on various social media sites for more years than I can remember, but I've never fully explained why.

I don't remember the year (early 1980s, maybe) when my family took a vacation trip to Disney World in Florida. One of the things I remember from that visit was a moment inside the Epcot sphere. There were displays inside, and one of them was a single cuttlefish alone inside a sphere aquarium. Nothing inside to interact with. It was just "standing" there, floating in its pedestal for the humans to gawk at.

I saw it. I knew despair. I looked into its alien eyes, and I felt despair. I knew that little critter had an intelligence like mine that could see the waves of patterns that sweep into the future, and it knew with certainty that its circumstance offered no hope for change. That's not the same grief as an animal accustomed to nothing but mistreatment. I knew that this animal was a person capable of imagining future alternatives, but it judged all of those scenarios hopeless. I knew that it understood despair.

My first real blog post, all the way back in 2007 November, was about cuttlefish and why I expect them eventually to be counted amongst Earth's rare intelligent species.

"Thankfully, others are beginning to take seriously the potential of intelligence in these and similar creatures of the waters. Today, I discovered that some people are watching them for (and finding) signs of behavior in these creatures that warrant another examination of our own ethical standards in working with these animals."

Finally, an experiment suggests that my intuition is correct.  They understand the future and their place within it.

"That seems like cuttlefish can exert self control, all right, but what's not clear is why. In species such as parrots, primates, and corvids, delayed gratification has been linked to factors such as tool use (because it requires planning ahead), food caching (for obvious reasons) and social competence (because prosocial behaviour - such as making sure everyone has food - benefits social species)."

It amuses me that they mention "making sure everyone has food" is a beneficial prosocial behaviour, since so much of human politics these days seems to be about some people making sure that antisocial selfish greed is the human standard.  The opposite of social competence.

Be like those smart species who act to benefit everyone. And keep searching for signs of intelligent life right here on Earth. More discoveries await us.

snow front yard 2020 January 18 SaturdayThe snowstorm blew through Minneapolis last night. It wasn't as bad as they had feared. I only had a few inches of snow, but there was an icy crust on the top layer after the main snow fell. That was unusual.

The temperature at the moment is -12C/9F air (-23C/-9F windchill). That wind is sharp. The forecast is for both temperatures to continue dropping through the day by several more degrees.

So it's a good day to stay at home.

In barely related news, my coworker sent me a new photo of Dominic in his new home, sleeping with his pack. He's adorable, as always.

Dominic has a new home

After meeting in a dog park two weekends ago, Dominic went on a test visit to a new home this past weekend. He did really well.  I knew he would; he's adorable. He is now staying there with other older dogs and acreage to run.

When I first got him, Dominic was a very submissive and shy (nearly fearful) personality. He'd roll over onto his belly at almost everything that happened around him. After a few months, he finally started emerging from his reticence, and he started going nose first into everything. Most people who met him commented on how beautiful and friendly he was.  "... and he has different colored eyes!"

Something happened about a month ago, though, and he started being very fearful of noises and being alone, especially in the back yard. For nearly a week, he refused to go into the back yard alone. He needed to be somewhere quieter than the #WarzoneInMinneapolis where I live. Also, the cat has lost a lot of weight during the last year, and she still was not happy with the dog being in the house.

Luckily, Dominic is now out frolicking with other dogs in open spaces.

A coworker sent me a note today with those photos:

"Sincerest thank you from [us]! Dominic is such a beautiful little man- so well behaved, playful and happy! Cedar and Pepper are happy to have a new buddy to share the yard with! Here are a few photos. Happy tails!"

Happy tails. Or, for Dominic's favorite song...

The lyrics aren't much to admire, but the tune is really catchy.  I think Dominic was entranced by the combination of whistling, finger snapping, clean rhythm, and the visuals of seeing the same 4 people in the same position with a switching background.

I took Dominic to the vet a week or two ago to get all of his latest vaccines. I mentioned to the vet that he's been experiencing what seem to be panic attacks in recent weeks. He was fine for a full year.  He showed no interest at all in going upstairs into the cat's domain. We even got through July 4th fireworks last year without major incident.

One night last month, however, he was scrambling at the back door to get back inside, where he was panting, drooling, and shaking. I thought he ate something terrible and was about to puke, so I took him back outdoors again. Outside, though, he hid under the porch stairs or ran nervously to the front gate then back into hiding again. Now, he's afraid to be in the back yard alone (but fine when I go with him), he's terribly frightened of fireworks (pulling strongly to run back home or hide in any available corner while out on walks), and he insists on hiding upstairs in a corner of my bedroom, greatly disturbing the Cat-Dog Détente in the house.

So I bought a nifty child gate that fit at the bottom of the stairs and worked nicely. Until suddenly it didn't. Yesterday, I found the gate chewed to pieces and on the floor, dog upstairs. There was blood on the gate where he had injured himself trying to chew at all of the obvious connecting points, trying to get past it. Dog scolded and spanked then checked for bleeding gums or lost teeth. (He was fine.) The gate was still functional enough that I put it back in place.

bad dog stairs baby gate destroyedToday, I come home and find it in place but torn apart and basically useless as any kind of fence. Furthermore... well... he tore the bottom step to shreds, down to bare wood, trying to claw his way under and through the gate.

I learned early that he doesn't tolerate cages.  I tried when I first got him to put him in a kennel while I was at work.  He destroyed that quickly enough and injured himself in the process of escaping it.  It took almost 2 months for his face to heal.  Fine.  He was well behaved in all other aspects, so sleeping on his mat on the floor by the couch was no problem.

I wish I knew what was triggering these panic episodes, though.

Back on that first day, with the panting and drooling and shaking, the only moments when he would freeze and stand perfectly still were when cars drove down the street blaring loud *thumpa*thumpa* music. Did somebody take a pot shot at the dog in the back yard while driving down the street? I don't know.

I also don't know the first 2 years of his history, either, so maybe there's some other trigger from his early life. He definitely has a brand new distaste for loud noises, though, which makes life in the #WarzoneInMinneapolis difficult now.

Earlier today, I scheduled a weekend appointment with someone interested in meeting Dominic as potential new owners.  Tonight, though, I worry about how they'll react to this new need of his for either quiet surroundings or full access to the house. Maybe he'd be fine with another dog around to take his cues from during human absence?

I dunno. If this behavior continues unsolved, then he'll end up back in the shelter system, which won't be any good for him. (See: "cages" above.)

I'm not a happy camper today.
