theme song: mississippi goddam
2021-Jul-20, Tuesday 05:26 pmThe news coming from Texas today is very... Texan. So what does it have to do with a song about Mississippi? Let's call it mendacity.
While conservative Texan politicians lie about their vote suppression efforts not being about vote suppression, we learn today that they passed a law about school education requirements only after removing references to issues of slavery, treaties with native peoples, women's suffrage, Brown v. Board Of Education, the KKK and "the ways in which it is morally wrong", and notably the 15th Amendment which refers to voting rights. It's hard to tell from the official records about the bill what's wrong with the final version until you see the changes side by side. That's when the omissions become painfully clear.
For claiming not to be authoritarian racists, that sure is a long list of authoritarian and racist-friendly changes. The sheer range of difference between what they claim and what they do is so vast that mendacity really is the best single word to capture it.
Which brings me to this black-and-white video clip that was recorded even before I was born. It's about Mississippi. I think you'll see the long-running trend. The second half of the song is still so very relevant. It's a useful history lesson, and that's exactly what this Texas bill covered... in order to hide it.
Thanks to
